Majuli:- India’s first ever carbon neutral district:-

  • Assam government has launched ‘Sustainable Action for Climate Resilient Development in Majuli’ (SACReD, Majuli) to make river island Majuli country’s first ever Carbon Neutral district by 2020.
  • SACReD, Majuli project is part of the French Development Agency assisted Assam Project on Forest and Biodiversity Conservation (APFBC).


‘Brexit’ and ‘YouTubers’:- words added in The Oxford English Dictionary (OED)

  • The OED has defined word ‘Brexit’ as “the (proposed) withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, and the political process associated with it”. The word Brexit has been developed from “Grexit” which describs a similar process in which Greece might leave the Eurozone. Grexit was added in OED, calling politics “a fruitful area for new words”.
  • ‘YouTubers’ was also added in OED. It has been defined as “frequent user of the video-sharing website YouTube, especially someone who produces and appears in videos on the site.”


Thal Favang Kut”:- Festival of Mizoram

  • The ‘Thal Favang Kut’ festival organised by Department of Tourism, Government of Mizoram began in state capital Aizawl with enthusiasm and fervour.
  • It is a post-harvest festival which is celebrated after harvesting the paddy.
  • It is celebrated every year in to thank the almighty as well as to promote tourism in the state.

Mahila Police Volunteer (MPV):- Haryana becomes first state to launch initiative
  • Haryana became the first state in the country to launch Mahila Police Volunteer (MPV) initiative for safety of women.
  • MPV initiative is a voluntary service under which Mahila Police Volunteers (Gram Sakhi) will be inducted. It aims to bridge gap between Police and Civil society for safety of women.
  • Under it, one MPV is envisaged per Gram Panchayat across the country to provide a link between police and community and facilitate women in distress.
  • The volunteers will be trained by the respective state police authorities on their role and responsibilities. They will be appointed by state government.


Rio de Janeiro accorded UNESCO world heritage status

  • The UN cultural body UNESCO has accorded world heritage status to Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro (nicknamed as Marvelous City).
  • It has been registered as “Carioca Landscapes between Mountain and Sea” on the UNESCO world heritage list.
  • The UNESCO World Heritage Sites are sites having special cultural or physical significance. The list is maintained by international World Heritage Programme administered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The committee comprises of 21 UNESCO member states which are elected by the General Assembly. Each World Heritage Site included in the list remains part of the legal territory of the state where it is located. But inclusion of sites in the list by UNESCO is in the interest of the international community to preserve each site. Presently, Italy with 50 sites is home to the greatest number of World Heritage Sites.


Nigeria’s Amina Mohammed Appointed as UN’s Deputy Secretary-General:-

  • Mohammed had previously served as special adviser to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon.
  • Mohammed played a crucial role in launching the clean-up program which could take up to 25 years to complete. Mohammed also led Nigeria’s delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Marrakech, Morocco last month as part of a landmark global climate change deal.
  • Mohammed has been the forefront of several climate change-related developments. Most notably, Mohammed spearheaded the campaign to launch the clean up of Nigeria’s oil-producing Ogoni region.


Global Teacher Prize 2017 of UK:-  Mumbai teacher Kavita Sanghvi nominated.:-

  • The Global Teacher Prize 2017 is given  by Varkey Foundation.
  • Kavita Sanghvi is Physics teacher and she was shortlisted for her experiential method of teaching physics.
  • At present, she is Principal of Mumbai’s MET Rishikul Vidyalaya


Smriti Mandhana - Indian Cricketer named in ICC Women’s Team of the Year:-

  • India’s opener batswoman Smriti Mandhana was named in the International Cricket Council (ICC’s) Women’s Team of the Year 2016.
  • This is for the first time ICC has named a women’s team of the year. 
  • The first of kind women’s team of the year 2016 will be captained by West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor.
